METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IGNITING IGNITABLE GAS GENERATING MATERIAL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ignite a gas generating material body by dispersing combustion products above the ignitable surface portion of the gas generating material body and to quickly and approximately uniformly ignite an ignitable gas generating material by moving a pyrotechnic material body for dispersing the combustion products. ;SOLUTION: When pyrotechnic material in a squib 170 in an inflator 14 is ignited and a charge pellet 202 burns, a gas generating material body 60 is ignited under the influence of combustion products generated. The combustion products moving in the opposite direction from the pellet 202 mainly enter a compartment 162 in the closure cap 56 of the inflator 14 and cause a thrust to act on the pellet 202. The pellet 202 is thereby propelled toward the other end and thus moves along the length of the ignitable surface of the gas generating material body 60 while burning to disperse the combustion products over the entire area of the ignitable surface.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
