PURPOSE: To perform a complete combustion of gas, deodoring, contrive to eliminate pollution, and perform an effective utilization of organic material contained in sludge by a method wherein drying mixture hot gas is supplied to a primary drying chamber and a secondary drying chamber with its temperature being decreased to a value less than an igniting temperature of organic material and drying discharged gas containing water vapor with a low temperature and a high concentration including bad odor substances is oxidized by a hot gas generating device. CONSTITUTION: A part of pre-heated air enters a drying combustion gas and heating air mixing gas line G. The air is mixed with hot gas of middle or low temperature and becomes a drying mixed hot gas and then enters a primary drying chamber 1h and a secondary drying chamber 1i. At this time, this drying mixture hot gas is decreased in its temperature down to a temperature in which organic material is not ignited. In turn, items to be dried comprised of sludge passes through a dried item supplying line J and enters the primary drying chamber 1h. Then, the item is semi-dried with drying mixture hot gas, extracted, enters the secondary drying chamber 1i, is dried and then is discharged. Dried discharged of water vapor containing bad odor substances gasified from the items to be dried passes through a drying discharged gas line H, is oxidized at a hot gas generating device and the gas is completely ignited and its odor is removed.
