Process used for the production of antigens corresponding to type 1 bovine herpesvirus gE glycoprotein in recombinant form and their use in serological differentiation between infected animals and vaccinated animals. The process comprises selection of those segments of the gene of the type 1 bovine herpesvirus gE glycoprotein which can be expressed in a prokaryotic vector, the expression of these sequences and use of the resulting polypeptides. The recombinant protein produced can be used for the generation of antibodies, the diagnosis of bovine infectious rhinotracheitis and serological differentiation between infected animals and vaccinated animals.
