One aspect of the invention is to provide humanized antibodies specific for VZV gpIII. Another aspect of the invention is to provide polynucleotides encoding humanized antibodies specific for VZV gpIII. Various expression vectors comprising polynucleotides encoding humanized VZV gpIII specific antibodies joined to promoter sequences are also provided. Similarly, another aspect of the invention is host cells transformed with expression vectors for the expression of humanized antibodies specific for VZV gpIII. Another aspect of the invention is to provide humanized anti-VZV gpIII antibodies that are labeled with a detectable label or a therapeutic label. Another aspect of the invention is to provide methods for treating, preventing or diagnosing, varicella zoster infections by administering a composition comprising a humanized VZV gpIII specific antibody. The invention also provides methods for the detection of VZV particles in samples for analysis, e.g., blood.
