Neural cells which express P75 nerve growth factor receptor (p75NTR) and which have a low resistance to β-amyloid peptide toxicity are treated with a binding agent that binds with p75NTR. The resulting neural cells display an increased resistance to β-amyloid peptide toxicity. Mutant and transfected neural cells are also disclosed in which the ability to express p75NTR has been removed with a resultant increase in resistance to β-amyloid peptide toxicity.
