Neural cells which express P75 nerve growth factor receptor (p75.sup. NTR) and which have a low resistance to &bgr;-amyloid peptide toxicity are treated with a binding agent that binds with p75.sup.NTR. The resulting neural cells display an increased resistance to &bgr;- amyloid peptide toxicity. Mutant and transfected neural cells are also disclosed in which the ability to express p75.sup.NTR has been removed with a resultant increase in resistance to &bgr;-amyloid peptide toxicity.
