This invention is directed to methods of inhibiting cell proliferation by inhibiting the mitogenic activity of macrophage migration inhibitory factor ('MIF'). Inhibitory nucleic acids directed against MIF inhibit cell growth in both cells induced by growth factors and transformed (malignant) cells that express oncogenes.
