The ac contactor has a higher voltage recovery capacity. It has at least one contact arrangement (110) with a number of contact pads (120) and a contact pad positioning device (150). At least one of the contact pads is fastened to the positioning device such that the positionable contact pad which is fastened to the device is selectively positioned in a current loop close position, in which the contact is in electrical contact with another, and a current loop open position in which the pad is removed from the other so that a gap is provided between them. The arrangement further includes a gas system (200 for a high voltage recovery capacity, which is connected to the contact arrangement (110). The gas system (200) has an arrangement to feed a gas for high voltage recovery into the gap between the positionable contact and the other contact. The gas has a high flow discharge cathode voltage fall off value of not less than about 300 volts for silver based contacts.
