The working procedure operates with units assigned to a communications path between subscriber or user units (16) through a first switching centre (12). Reconfiguration units use first and the second network switching centres (12,22). Pref., the network (10) uses satellites (12), gateways or transfer units (14) and subscriber units (16). The transfer units couple the network to local, public switched telecommunication networks (18). The satellites and transfer units serve as switch-over centres for the network.
