The method for characterising plant photosynthesis maintains the plants in darkness for a dark phase which is interrupted by a step waveform light pulse, where the induced fluorescence response is captured. The dark phase duration is less than one second, the light pulse duration is between 1 and 30 msec. The measurement intervals begin during the data phase, and continue at a maximum separation of 0.5 msec between measurements. The intensity decay of fluorescence is matched to an exponential curve.
