An incremental measurement method for indicating or printing instruments uses a converter from analogue into pulsed signals and uses the pulsed signals to drive a stepper motor and hence position the indicator or printer head according to the measurement value. The order of operation is that the motor is first at rest, is driven to the indication position by the pulses, remains at this position until indication or printing is completed, and then returns to rest position. The rest position is at the scale mid-point. The first operation may be initiated by termination of the print operation or may be controlled by a counter.
