Apparatus and method for efficiently utilizing heat generated owing to so-called cold fusion. A metal rod (5), heat pipe or the like is directly connected to a cathode (2) in which excess heat is generated owing to the Pons-Fleischmann effect, to deprive the cathode (2) of heat. The heat is used to perform electrical or mechanical work. Depriving the cathode of heat also contributes to maintenance of the performance of the cathode (2). IMAGE
