Process for treating sediments in water comprises mechanical, chemical and biological treatment stages which convert the sediments into micronised, conditioned sludges inoculated with microorganisms capable of digesting and mineralising the organic material in the sediments. Also claimed is appts. for carrying out the above process, comprising an appliance that glides over the sediments and is equipped with a chassis bearing an agitator and distributors for chemicals and microorganisms, and a housing that surrounds the chassis and is open at the bottom and the base of the rear.
