A single-acting hydraulic jack (11,12) is secured to a pivot axis (19) attached within the bath, with the jack shaft connected via a hinge (25) at one end of a supporting surface (6). The other end of the supporting surface is hinged to a rod (23) articulated to the interior of the bath. The jack is actuated by water delivered via a conventional supply pipe (10) and controlled by a tap (9). The end of the jack shaft carries a roller (13) which engages an inclined surface of the bath such that extension of the jack causes the support surface to move vertically upwards from the base of the bath.
