PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect key from the melody of performance data. ;SOLUTION: Melody data is divided into phrases (#1 to #N) and the respective phrases are divided into chord rhythms (#1 to #1M, to, #N1 to #NL) of one measure or two beats according to the characteristics of the melody. Chord tones are extracted from the respective chord rhythm sections. The chord rhythms are combined at need in accordance with the extracted chord tones. The chord rhythms (#11 to #1M', to, #N1 to #NL') changed in the sections are determined as the detection sections for detecting the key. The chord tones and pitch name strings are extracted by each of the respective detection sections. The keys which are candidates are extracted in accordance with the detected chord tones and pitch name strings.
