PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject new compound giving a 2,2-disubstituted-1,3- propanediol useful as a synthetic raw material for synthetic resin, plasticizer raw material, surfactant, etc., by hydrogenation. ;SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by formula I (R1 is a 1-18C straight or branched alkyl, an aryl, an alkylaryl, etc.; R2 to R6 are each H, a 1-18C straight or branched alkyl, a cycloalkyl, etc.), e.g. 2-allyl-2- methyl-1,3-propanediol. The compound can be produced by the Cannizzaro reaction of a 4-unsaturated aldehyde of formula II with an alkaline formaldehyde. Concretely, the compound is produced by charging 0.1mol of a 4-unsaturated aldehyde and 16g of 40% formalin, cooling with ice, dropping 40mL of a 10wt.% potassium hydroxide/ethanol solution to the system spending 1hr and reacting the components at room temperature for 3 days.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
