PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restore disordered orientation of an antiferroelectric liq. crystal due to thermal shock to improve contrast in a short time by a simple method or apparatus. ;SOLUTION: In an antiferroelectric liq. crystal cell 10 comprising two electrode plates 2 and 3 and an antiferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. 1 held between the electrode plates 2 and 3, the orientation of the liq. crystal compsn. 1 is disordered by thermal shock.
