PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal orientation restoring method capable of being used easily even at the time of a normal device use and also to provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal display device provided with a restoring means realizing the restoring method so that a user can restore the orientation by himself. ;SOLUTION: An electric orientation restoring circuit 30 is provided in the ferroelectric liquid crystal display device provided with a cell 1 in which a liquid crystal layer including ferroelectric liquid crystal material is provided in between two sheets of substrates respectively having electrode lines 5, 6. The electric orientation restoring circuit 30 induces the total flow of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material at an ambient temp. so that ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules become a prescribed orientation on a smectic phase. The electric orientation restoring circuit 30 induces the total flow of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material by generating a resonance in the cell 1 while allowing an oscillator 32 to impress a variable voltage on the cell 1 by a user via a switch 34 or a signal from a sensor 38.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
