PURPOSE: To provide a method for rapidly and accurately separating and identifying a lactic acid bacterium in clinical tests and food industries. CONSTITUTION: A lactic acid bacterium-containing specimen such as stool, etc., is cultured in a lactic acid separating culture medium under a condition in which partial pressure of oxygen in the culture is controlled to make 5-15% oxygen concentration. Only the lactic acid bacterium is only selectively grown and separated. The lactic acid bacterium thus separated is hybridized with a DNA restriction enzyme fragment derived from a lactic acid bacterium or the length of a restriction enzyme fraction characteristic to the lactic acid bacterium is measured to separate and identify the lactic acid bacterium. A kit for separating a lactic acid bacterium can be used for the separation and identification.
