PURPOSE: To provide a builder for detergent and a detergent composition consisting of a compound derived from epoxysuccinic acid or maleic acid and aspartic acid, exhibiting excellent chelating performance and having high water- solubility and improved bio-degradability. ;CONSTITUTION: The detergent builder having improved bio-degradability and expressed by formula (R is H or OH; X is H, alkali metal or ammonium). The builder has excellent chelating performance and extremely high solubility in water and, accordingly, there is no trouble of deposition to a washer. It can easily be decomposed by microorganisms in natural environment and gives extremely low influence on the environment. The builder is easily synthesizable at a low cost by the reaction of epoxysuccinic acid or maleic acid with aspartic acid in an aqueous medium and usable in the form of alkali metal salt, ammonium salt or their mixture. The builder is used as a detergent composition containing 1-40wt.% of the builder.
