Heavy-duty laundry powder components can be separated into three major categories: surfactants, builders, and additives. Builders are essential components of powder detergents and constitute more than 50percent of the detergent composition (Table 1). Generally, the ratio of surfactant to builder in detergents is higher in Japan than in Europe and the United States because the level of water hardness is lower.
