The invention relates to a synthetic peptide comprising the sequence ha ppp v hl c h c h s lys arrg w, wherein haa is absent or represents sys or s er; wherein n is an or asu, xcc represents or is a w e and w is a hydrophobic peptide moiety, to an intermediate for the preparation of the peptide, a process for preparing the peptide, a pulmonary surfactant containing it, a lipid mixture and a drug for the treatment of respiratory failure syndrome comprising the surfactant as an active ingredient. The peptide is readily isolated and suitable for mass production. Because it is readily soluble in methanol and other such solvents, it can easily be mixed with a lipid mixture and is suitable for preparing a pulverulent surfactant. The latter exhibits a well-expressed ability to form suspensions as well as potential surfactant, and is therefore useful in the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of respiratory failure syndrome.
