Antiviral effect of the plant Hypericum perforatum L. against human cytomegalovirus

A methanolic extract of the plant Hypericum perforatum L. with activity against the cytomegalovirus using a rapid technique for detecting the early antigens. Human cytomegalovirus is a common cause of infections in immunosuppressed patients. The most common in patients with AIDS is retinitis which can lead to blindness. The available drugs have many side effects and the virus has shown resistance to them. The total methanolic extract of the plant Hypericum perforatum L. and its chromatographic fractions have significant antiviral activity against human cytomegalovirus. Testing was carried out with a modification of the well-known "shell-vial" culture method. The results also showed an increase in the survival of the cells of the culture used when tested by the MTT method. The use of the extract by man could be by mouth or parenterally after suitable processing according to the results of the pharmacological and toxicological studies and the clinical trials.
