A lubricating compsn. for water-based well fluids comprises (wt.%): (a) 50-99 of a constituent (A) comprising one or more esters obtd. by reaction of a 8-24 C mono-carboxylic acid (A1) and a 2-20 C polyol (A2), the molar ratio of acid:alcohol (A1:A2) being 1:1 and (n-n/10):1; where n is the number of OH gps. in (A2); (b) 1-50% of a constituent (B) comprising one or more 8-24 C mono-carboxylic acids; the carboxylic acid (A1 and B) having 1-3 unsaturations. Also claimed is the use of the compsn. in drilling fluids, and the water-based fluids thus formed.
