Mechanised reception areas (3,12) optionally one area for direct (1) and phased (2) incineration lines, turn round collection vehicles, weigh and pile up rubbish. In the direct line, rubbish enters a furnace (4) whose boiler (6) provides district heat or electrical output (7). Clinker (5) has ferrous metal removed; flue gases, after treatment (8) removing fly-ash (9), are discharged (11) by chimney (10). In the other line (2), rubbish undergoes sorting (12) before milling (13), screening (14) for ferrous items (15) and riddling (16). Organic matter separated here passes (17) to the direct lines. A final separating, milling and compacting stage (18) uses furnace gas for drying. Extracted water (20) is discharged with flue gases (8). The resulting billets (19), stock-piled, are burnt (21) when the direct line is less busy.
