The base (1a) of the collection hopper (1) has a layer of course sand (9). The sand bed comprises three layers on top of one another of increasing granular size from bottom to top. A network of horizontal distribution pipes (7) is buried within the sandbed. The pipework system is supplied with dry air from a series of compressor systems and a header (5). The air escapes from the rows of orifices in the network and passes through the organic waste which is thus dried. ADVANTAGE - Permits extended storage times without the degradation or putrification of the waste.
