The device generates three control signals strictly related to the angular position of the rotor. One pole piece (13) with North-seeking polarity extends over an angle of 120 deg. around the shaft (12). The other pole piece (14) of opposite polarity occupies the remaining 240 deg.. Two Hall effect transducers (15,16) are spaced at 120 deg. and their outputs are combined e.g. in a NOR circuit, which provides the third signal when neither of the Hall effect devices gives any output.
