摘要
An efficient, lossless, continuous-resolutionrepresentation (the "PM representation") of highlydetailed geometric models for computer graphicsspecifies a succession of progressively more detailedpolygonal meshes (i.e., "progressive meshes") as a basepolygonal mesh and a sequence of complete meshrefinement transformations (e.g., the vertex splittransformation) that approximate the model atprogressively finer levels of detail. Procedures forstoring and transmitting geometric models using the PMrepresentation address several practical problems incomputer graphics: smooth geomorphing oflevel-of-detail approximations, progressivetransmission, mesh compression, and selectiverefinement. An optimized mesh simplification procedureconstructs the PM representation of a model from anarbitrary polygonal mesh, while preserving the geometryof the original mesh as well as its overall appearanceas defined by its discrete and scalar appearanceattributes such as material identifiers, color values, normals, and texture coordinates. In particular, thePM representation and these procedures preservediscontinuity curves such as creases and materialboundaries of the geometric model.
