A method for measuring the physicochemical properties of tissues or cells forarbitrarily varying the physicochemical environment around the tissues orcells depending on the purpose of an experiment and an apparatus therefor. Theapparatus involves means (40) for maintaining the regular physicochemicalenvironment around a tissue or cells of an organism; means (50) forarbitrarily varying the physicochemical environment; means (10 and 20) formeasuring the physicochemical properties of the above-mentioned tissue orcells; and means (30) for comparing the physicochemical properties of thetissue or cells before and after varying the physicochemical environment. Themonitoring means (10) is a potentiometer for measuring the electrical andphysiological properties of the tissue or cells which involves an integratedcell installation system (1) provided with two or more micro-electrodes (11)on a substrate, cell installation members (6) located thereon for installingthe above-mentioned tissue or cells and a leading pattern (12) wherebyelectric signals are supplied to the micro-electrodes (11) and drawn outtherefrom.
