The rheostat includes the plate which may be in direct contact with the surrounding medium or it may be separated by a protective panel which is either transparent to heat radiation or has the high emissivity coating. The space between the panel and the plate is filled with a chemically inert gas or is a vacuum. The surface is placed on the top or side wall of the motor unit and the plate is cooled by the circulation of air coming from within the vehicle, driven by a ventilation fan.
