The system between a tractor and a trailer comprises a coupling constituted by a shaft (3) and coupling pin (4). The shaft is attached at one of its ends to the rear of the tractor (1) and the coupling pin is pivoted to the front of the trailer (2). The external free projecting end of the shaft is such that the length (L) between this end and the tractor rear axle (7) is equal to the distance (D) between the pin and the trailer rear axle (7). The shaft is displaceable relative to the tractor between a retracted position in the tractor and an external position projecting towards the rear. The shaft slides in a corresponding housing under the tractor floor.
