Olefins are epoxidised by contact with a source of O and a Mn complex in which the Mn is co-ordinated to a N-contg. ligand such that there is a ratio of Mn to co-ordinated N atoms of 1:3. Pref. the Mn complex pref. has formula (LMnX3)Y (I): where X is a co-ordinating species from RO(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), F(-), NCS(-), N3(-), I3(-), NH3, NR3, RCOO(-), RSO3(-), RSO4(-), OH(-), O2(2-), HCOO(-), H2O, SH(-), CN(-), OCN(-) and/or S4(2-); R is 1-20C (cyclo)alkyl, aryl and/or benzyl; two opt. being connected to form a bridging unit between two O co-ordinating with Mn; L is 3-60C ligand having at least three N co-ordinating with Mn; and Y is an oxidatively-stable anion.
