The present invention provides a composition of matter comprising a non-infectious, mutated virus suitable for use in producing a vaccine. Modified plasmids for expression in a recombinant cell include DNA encoding a non-infectious companion mutant virus protein and regulatory elements necessary to express such DNA in a cell. The present invention also provides a method for inhibiting the spread of a virus infection comprising contacting the virus with a compound that inhibits thiol-reductase / protein disulfide isomerase activity in the virus.
