FIELD: chemical industry, more specifically oxidation of sulfur dioxide to trioxide in the manufacture of sulfuric acid from natural sulfur or during cleaning of sulfur-containing industrial gas wastes. SUBSTANCE: to produce sulfur trioxide, the reaction mixture containing sulfur dioxide and oxygen is passed in succession through several beds of vanadium catalyst. Layer temperature is maintained within 360-500 C. At least through one of the catalyst beds, reaction mixture is passed every 1-75 min with air or oxygen directly or oppositely to passage of the reaction mixture. EFFECT: more efficient oxidation process.
