The traffic lights have an indicator of the duration of the red phase. The indicator arrangement, which can be mounted on the traffic lights, can give a mechanical analogue signal , e.g. the position of a pointer or indicator point on a scale. Alternatively, the indicator can give a digital signal. A stationary transmitter can send an electromagnetic signal to receivers in vehicles with displays. A controller in a vehicle can be used to switch off the engine of a vehicle at a red light.
