Dust and gas explosions in containers and pipes generate an excess pressure the level of which depends on the time between the beginning and end of the explosion process or the time between detection and extinguishing. Conventional explosion-suppression systems achieve extinguishing times of between 50 and 60 msec. The novel extinguisher considerably accelerates the introduction of extinguishing agent, improves its distribution in space and simultaneously reduces a rise in pressure as a result of blasting in extinguishing agent. In order to enable the extinguishing agent to be introduced as quickly as possible into the area where an explosion is to be extinguished, the agent is introduced over a large cross-section, generally the entire cross-section of the extinguisher. To this end, the extinguishing agent is fixed between two bursting membranes, ejected as necessary by pressurized gas into the area where an explosion is to be extinguished and distributed both to the sides and the front by the gas jet following at sound velocity. The extinguisher is suitable for combating incipient explosions, of the type which occur in production plants and produce explosive dusts or gases. Since water is well-suited to this extinguisher, its use in the food industry is preferred as expenditure on cleaning is low.
