A method for the alkylation of benzene or substituted benzene or to the alkylation of alkylated benzene

PURPOSE: To prepare an alkylated product with a low impurity content by reacting benzene or a substituted benzene with an alkylating agent in the pres ence of a specific catalyst. ;CONSTITUTION: The alkylated product is obtained by reacting benzene or a substituted benzene with an alkylating agent of 2-18C (e.g. propylene) at 100-250°C in the presence of a catalyst, which has been prepared from an acidic mordenite zeolite and an inert silica binder, wherein the molar ratio of silica to aluminum is at least 30:1 and the crystalline structure has a symmetry index of at least 1, which is determined by X-ray diffraction. The catalyst retains at least 60% of its activity for a period of at least 500 hr. of use, preferably, at least 75% of its activity for a period of at least 750 hr. of use. Cumene known as isopropylbenzene is useful for preparing phenol and acetone or α- methylstyrene, and ethylbenzene is useful for preparing styrene.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
