PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of effectively preventing storage disease of vegetables and fruits, by including two kinds of compounds produced by a specific filamentous fungus. ;SOLUTION: This composition is obtained by formulating (A) 5-pentyl-2- furaldehyde (i) and 5-(4-pentenyl)-2-furaldehyde (ii) produced by filamentous fungus Kyu-W63 strain (FERM BP-5578) optionally with (B) an excipient, an emulsifying agent, an extender, etc. The filamentous fungus Kyu-W63 strain itself can be used as the antimicrobial composition. The component (i) and the component (ii) can be obtained by separation from the culture product of the filamentous fungus Kyu-W63 strain followed by purification by a conventional procedure and also by chemical synthesis. In preserving vegetables and fruits, the composition in an amount in which the width of a storage chamber, kinds of vegetables and fruits and their amounts are taken into consideration is made to exist to control the storage disease of vegetables and fruits by the filamentous fungus.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
