PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hypnotic agent, hypnotic beverage and food products, and hypnotic feeds which contain a specific essential oil as an active ingredient and brings sleep introduction and/or sound sleep on people and animals of sleeplessness and sleepless tendency. SOLUTION: This hypnotic agent contains lavender essential oil as an active ingredient. The lavender essential oil is obtained, for example, by subjecting the flower spikes of lavender belonging to the family Labiatae. This essential oil contains linalyl acetate (about 25-55wt.%), linalol, pinene, limonene, geraniol and the like. The dose of the lavender oil every administration is preferably 0.1-640mg/kg body weight. This hypnotic agent does not cause side-effect, for example, excitation at the initial stage after administration, irritation on the stomach and giddy feeling on the next day of the treatment, and its action is mild with wide safety range and low resistance and low addiction. In addition, the lavender oil may be added to cookies, biscuits, jelly as well as to animal feeds.
