PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assist efficient access to information scattered over a network by preventing a stray child problem from arising in a large amount of information in a hypertext. SOLUTION: The history of reference that a user has made from an arbitrary hypertext through hyperlinks is automatically recorded and displayed in the history book window 101. Histories are managed for every hypertext, and in each page of the text, information on a selected link source object 108 and link destination information referred to by a hyperlink by selecting it are represented like a test, an icon 109, etc., and used like indexes of a book. Consequently, the history of reference by hyperlinks is left automatically as combinations of pieces of information on reference sources and reference destinations. The history enables easy access to information, which was accessed before and has an index function. The history information can be utilized more effectively by adding a comment, etc., to the history book window itself.
