PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable valuable metals contained in waste lithium batteries to be selectively separated, purified, and recovered by extracting the metals with a phosphorus compd. such as a bis(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phosphinic acid deriv. ;SOLUTION: This extractant for valuable metals comprises a phosphorus compd. represented by the formula (wherein X1 and X2 are each O or S) [e.g. bis(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phosphinic acid deriv.]. Valuable metals such as Co and Ni are recovered as follows: a crushing product obtd. by baking and crushing waste lithium batteries is treated with an aq. alkali soln. (e.g. an aq. ammonia soln.); thus obtd. recovered product is dissolved in an aq. mineral acid (e.g. sulfuric acid) soln. and filtered to be separated into a soln. and a residue; then the soln. under the control of pH is brought into contact with a soln. of the extractant in a solvent (e.g. toluene) to conduct extraction and separation; and the extractant soln. is brought into contact with an aq. mineral acid soln. to cause backward extraction and separation to recover high-purity valuable metals.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
