PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a glass material which has a specific glass composition and a specific shape, whose volume is increased by the irradiation of UV light, and which exhibits a negative refractive index. ;SOLUTION: This glass material has a GeO2-SiO2 glass composition having a GeO2 content of 0.5-90mol.%, preferably 3-60mol.%, is formed by a high frequency sputtering method in an argon atmosphere or in an argon-oxygen mixture gas atmosphere having an oxygen volume content of ≤20%, preferably approximately ≤10%, and has e.g. the form of a thin film usually having a thickness of approximately 0.1-10μm.
