PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the host material of a lithium ion battery, high in initial discharge capacity, and excellent in the life characteristic too. SOLUTION: This host material is composed of a carbon-nitrogen layered compound which has a half value width of the (002) diffraction peak of 1.0 deg.C or less in an X-ray diffraction diagram, the surface interval d0d02 of the (002) surface calculated from the X-ray diffraction diagram is 3.4 or less. And in this cargon-nitrogen layer-like compound, the third peak apprars in the position of binding energy between both first and second peaks, besides the first peak appearing in the position of binding energy = 3971eV in XPS analysis, and the second peak appearing in the position of binding energy = 4001eV.
