PURPOSE: To obtain a submicron track width by locating a pole tip layer of magnetic pole layers within a notch structure. ;CONSTITUTION: A write head 100 has a pole tip region 107 located between an air bearing surface(ABS), a zero throat level and a rear region. When a fluctuating current is supplied to a coil 110 through lead wires 112, 114, flux reversal is induced in a lower magnetic pole layer 102 and an upper magnetic pole layer 104. The flux reversal crosses a gap G of the pole tip region 107 formed by a gap layer 106, then passes through the ABS and extends to a magnetic medium which is travelling for data writing. The number of tracks per width (TPI) of the magnetic medium is dependent on the width of the pole tip region 107. A notch structure 120 is provided on the gap layer 106, and this notch structure is left on the write head 100 during manufacture thereof.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
