PURPOSE:To detect a specific toxinogenic Escherichia coli in a specimen by labeling an oligonucleotide for the detection of the toxinogenic Escherichia coli and hybridizing the prepared labeled nucleic acid probe with DNA or RNA in the specimen. CONSTITUTION:An oligonucleotide having a nucleic acid sequence of 5' ARACCGGRCRCRARARRCCCRGRR-3' or 5'- AGARAGRRGARRCRRAARGRGRCC-3' (A is adenine; C is cytosine; G is guanine; R is thymine or uracil) or a complementary chain thereof and used for detecting toxinogenic Escherichia coli is labeled. The obtained labeled nucleic acid probe is hybridized with DNA or RNA in a specimen, and the label of the hybridized bonded product is measured to detect the toxinogenic Escherichia coli in the specimen.
