PURPOSE:To obtain large-area film-shaped diamond having high adhesive strength at a high rate by burning a diamond depositing raw compd. so that an incomplete combustion region is formed, setting a substrate in a nonoxidizing atmosphere in the region, and depositing the diamond while moving the substrate. CONSTITUTION:A diamond depositing raw compd. (e.g. gaseous acetylene) and oxygen are supplied to a burner 1 to form a combustion flame consisting of a flame core 2 of the incomplete combustion region, an inner flame 3 of the complete combustion region, and an outer flame 4. A reticular material 6 is provided in the outer flame 4 as an obstacle, the substrate 5 set on a supporting and heat-dissipating plate 7 is moved continuously or intermittently in direction of the arrow to bring the substrate 5 into contact with the inner flame 3, and a large-area film-shaped diamond is formed on the substrate 5. By this method, the film-shaped diamond having high adhesion is obtained, and the diamond can be appropriately used for the knife edge of a shearing machine, a cutting tool, etc.
