Oxide based ceramic cutting tool with performance to cost ratio, useful for machining metals

Oxide-based ceramic cutting tool with a favourable performance to cost ratio, comprises a matrix of 5-60 (10-50) vol. % homogeneously distributed whisker-like polycrystalline fibres of TiCxNyOz (x, y = 0-1, z = 0-0.2 (0-0.15)) having a length of 2-100 microns, a diameter of 0.15-5 microns and a length to diameter ratio of 5-50, coated with a thin layer of refractory material using CVD or PVD techniques, the thickness of the layer being less than the mean radius of the fibres. The matrix pref. comprises Al2O3 and/or a blend of Al2O3 with less than 30 vol. % other ceramic oxides, hard carbides, nitrides, borides and/or binder metals, pref. less than 20 vol. % ZrO2.
