Ampholytic solute zones which have been stabilized byisoelectrical focusing in a separation medium such as acapillary are mobilized by the introduction of a relativelylarge quantity of zwitterion to one of the electrode chambers.When a voltage is then applied between the electrode chambersas in the focusing stage, the zwitterion migrates into theseparation medium in accordance with the isoelectric point ofthe zwitterion. The voltage is maintained to cause continuousmigration of the zwitterion into the capillary, thereby formingan expanding zone which displaces the focused zones formed inthe focusing stage and causes then to travel axially throughthe capillary toward a detection point or out of the capillaryfor purposes of recovery.
