The invention concerns a saddle of which the stirrups are each held on thestirrup leathers (5) via a safety device (11). The safety device (11)comprises an insert part (12) which can be inserted into the stirrup eye (13)and has projections (17a, 17b) for engaging at the front and rear over thelower stirrup eye bar (21). An upper part (22) is connected to the insert part(12). The upper part (22) has an eye (29) for the stirrup leather (5), arecess (25) for holding an upper bar (26) of the stirrup eye (13), and amounting (31a) for a cover plate (27) which can be moved manually, without anyauxiliary devices, from an insertion position into a closed position. In theinsertion position, this cover plate (27) uncovers the recess (25) for theupper stirrup eye bar (26) so that the insert part (12) can be inserted intothe eye (13). The cover plate (27) is further mounted and designed such that,in the closed position, the recess (25) is covered by the upper stirrup eyebar (26) which can be introduced thereinto, and is released only when thestirrup exerts thereon a pivot force exceeding a safety limit.
