The invention relates to an induction welding device for joining two pre-strips in an installation for continuous production of a hot-rolled steel strip from continuously cast slabs, which is wound into a coil after being rolled out into a pre-strip in a first shaping stage, unwound and fed at a leading pass speed into a second shaping stage. The rear end of the pre-strip rolled in the second shaping stage is cropped before it runs into the induction welding device arranged upstream from the second shaping stage and joined to the front cropped end of the following pre-strip into a quasi-continuous pre-strip by induction welding. Said pre-strip is subdivided according to the required coil weights only downstream from the second shaping stage, and wound as a finished strip. The induction welding device is thus placed in a stationary position with inductors (12) provided on both sides of the strip pass line and interacts with devices to position and temporarily clamp the pre-strip ends which are to be welded. A looping pit for intermediate storage of the in-running and out-running pre-strip (B) is located both upstream and downstream from the induction welding device and a driver (5, 9) controlling the in-feed speed of the pre-strip (B) is placed upstream from each looping pit.
